Shining the bone...
OK, this is a test for my siblings...
I just polished off the rest of a slab of ribs that I bought yesterday at a local rib joint. For their $7.95 twice-a-summer special, I am not firing up the grill and getting all smoke-smelled. Not only did I get a full side of meaty ribs, I got a large order of fries, a little cup of coleslaw, and a hunk of garlic toast.
I should have made 3-4 meals (they were really meaty) out of my purchase or maybe enjoyed a couple for breakfast, but they are gone. The good news is there is still time to get by for a second slab this week-end!
Now, here's the question for Clellie, Betsy and Jim. Do you still shine the bone?
I know you know what I mean. For anyone else reading this, "shining the bone" means not only doing a good job licking off all the sauce and gnawing off most of the meat, it means gnawing off all the meat. It means scraping the bone with your teeth until that bone is shiny!
It means sticking the end of that bone in your mouth and pulling it out slowly, pressing that bone down on your lower front teeth until all the meat is gone. Gone!
When we were kids, we couldn't get another rib until we had "shined" the bone. That was Pop's rule. And it was a good one.
